I'm from Porto, Portugal and I'm living in Curitiba, Brazil, since 2014. I studied fashion design but my drawing skills where much more appreciated in the footwear industry, taking me to be, by invitation, a footwear designer for Hush Puppies, and many ohter international brands based in Portugal. After this experience, the marketing and design appealed me, redirecting me to work with the fashion industry but with my own company. I started to do advertisment with new media tools in all sort of platforms, print, web, video, photography and events.

Since the beggining of my professional carrer, traveling was part as my work, challenging my aeshthics instincts to art, where I've been secretly testing painting since 2000. In 2003 the universe of painting finnaly appears as part of my profissional context, interacting with my aesthetic ideals and life. In 2005 I organised my first exhibition in my hometown, Porto. In this first appearence all my works were sold, and a few months after I was invited to be part of the national video archive of the portuguese artists.

A few months later, in july 2006, the Greek magazine Freemag publishes 3 pages highlighting my work, writing “the new promissing painter in the contemporary art scene.”

Since then, I took very seriously the article on this magazine.

ATTITUDE MAGAZINE - PORTUGAL / ENGLISH

Restless, tense, visceral, the oeuvre of Eduardo Bragança (Oporto, 1974) has the vital energy and a complexity that captivates us with a feeling of uncertainty and fills our spirit with a sense of reflection. The origins of this formula are to be found in a career dedicated to the communication of emotions. Having graduated in fashion design with a specialisation in the design of footwear, Eduardo worked for several years in this area before establishing himself as a graphic designer and advertising consultant, developing countless projects and campaigns for advertising agencies and clients both from Portugal and abroad. His fascination for art developed parallel to this in a cross-disciplinary manner, questioning habits and challenging other realities and forms of expression inevitably inspired by a vast aesthetic and visual heritage and considerable experience in graphics. In 2005, with his first exhibition, he was rewarded with immediate public recognition of his work. He was invited to become a member of the Portuguese Artists’ National Video Archive (Registo Nacional em vídeo dos Artistas Plásticos Portugueses) for the Cinemateca, and he inaugurated his international career by accepting an invitation from an independent agent to represent his work in Greece and Cyprus. Imbued with iconographic and literary elements, his representations and essays question, exalt and provoke, using a plastic language with references to figurative art and abstract expressionism. Starting with fragments of reality, doubts and exaltations, the canvas is torn asunder by impulsive gestures charged with chromatic vibrations in an emotional load that places love at the centre of human relations. While his paintings expose the rawness of feelings, ‘Exploring Emotions’ and ‘Affection’ use other media for the same ends. The former is a plastic arts and video documentary project that evolved over 12 months, when the artist sought the answers to spontaneous questions about life placed in the streets of 12 cities around the world. Returning to an approach which seeks to establish sudden and intimate contact with strangers – in this case 12 kisses – Eduardo has developed a photographic project in partnership with the photographer Sérgio Esperancinha, which can be seen in the shape of street murals in Oporto, in São Paulo, and also, in the future, in London, New York, Paris, Lisbon, Coimbra and Hong Kong. His most recent work, which we present here, 'La Poesie est sur les choses que nous disent pas', includes 30 new works, some of which are available at Inove and Camila Casotti Architecture in Curitiba, Brazil.

FREEMAG - GREECE / ENGLISH TEXT

Probably at this time no one has heard of him in Greece. Better. Artists shouldn’t be introduced to success early. The more pieces of art they get to introduce before they shine under the artificial fireworks of success and admiration the more far they will go. (No I don’t know many things about art. But as a reader I have lost my trust in the media. This is why I am glad he is not known in Greece. As much as i understand about modern art i think that Eduardo Bragança is a super finding. I wouldn’t like to see him in a lifestyle magazine, except in our style Free.)

I am very afraid that when Andy Warhol was drinking martinis with Marlin Monroe in the legendary Studio 54, he himself couldn’t imagine that his name would make up a turning point in pop art. When I first saw Merlin through Warhol, her face was closed in a black veil and her impressive characteristics looked like they where vibrating from the energy of the hot pink and the electric blue color.

Through this dark face, that reminded a ghost, Warhol was mourning the end of the 60s. He shouldn’t worry though, because there are many who continue his work, one of the most passionate is our friend, Bragança. There is strong evidence that Bragança is indeed a great talent. His is only 31 years old and he has already been invited from the National Cinema Library of Portugal to be part of the exhibition with artists from all over the world. He went. He won this “prize”! And that’s not all…

His first rehearsal was the spot of our introduction. “Rehearsal” was the name of his first collection. I met him a wonderful day in the beginning of June, a bright day full of white clouds, wonderful blue sky and an outgoing feeling of a good mood in the atmosphere. Or at least it felt that way to my. Christina Mauromixali had invited him in order to introduce him to a few people in her circle. Believing that his work is very FREE, she also brought him to me. With him he had all the copies of “Rehearsal”, in which, from what it looked were very impressive.

It isn’t chance that he sold all the originals in less than a week. They called him the “new voice of pop art”, probably to annoy him. I had a thought filled with unkindness: pop art, art povera, the junk style are trends and streams of art that have been made by rich persons playing with garbage. I understand all this from first hand, as a will state again, I am a fan of pop art and that shows in every place in my home, from the paintings up to the ash tray- a star fish from green latex. But here I find something more timelessly beautiful…I am rewriting all that is present in his biography in his site: He has studied fashion design and has advertisement designer experience. Later he decided to create his own company, that with time cultivated its services into other ways of communication, hiding for a while the brushes, the water paints and the easels. Bragança’s capabilities in advertisement where those that gave him the position of executive creative art director five years later, creating one of the biggest advertising agencies. It was this transitional period that pushed him to painting, finding this way a parallel way to express his “beliefs” and his worries. A different way of communication began presenting hidden messages on canvas.

I spent over an hour looking at his online collection. I stuck with his last work with the title “Série Azul”. I had another thought: in the choice of colors that Bragança picks the experts may see something that is described with beautiful passages from “action painting”. I think that I see clearly the psychoanalysis of a very alive, very dynamic and – as all shows- upcoming artist.

Backstage of out interview: I kept wanting to ask him to send me a painting of his. My mind was full of the image of that painting over my couch. I almost told him. But was embarrassing. I don’t like asking for presents. I have self value. In addition I have a friend, who I am sure that, she saw his works, she would say something foolish, like “forget, I doesn’t fit over the couch, wake up!”
